Benefits of Using a Partner Development Org and Demo Environment
There are several benefits to leveraging a partner development org versus an individual developer org. They include a higher API call limit, more storage, and a greater number of licenses available for your team. Check out the charts below to understand the difference in capabilities and number of licenses available between the individual and partner developer orgs.
In addition to development orgs, partners will need to leverage a demo environment for testing their solution, and customer demos. There are four different types of demo environment editions to choose from:
- 1. Enterprise/Platform Edition
- 2. Professional Edition
- 3. Group Edition
- 4. Consultng Partner Edition
Review the comparison charts on the second half of this page to understand which one best fits your needs.

- - Partner Developer Org is best used by ISVs for managed package development and packaging
- - Partner Test and Group editions provide API access for testing before passing security review
- - The Consulting Partner Edition is fully loaded with features that allow consulting partners to best showcase Salesforce
- - All orgs (except individual developer orgs) are on a trial basis for one year, but may be extended by logging a case. In order to keep track of expiration dates, it is a best practice to leverage Environment Hub, which contains org management functionality
Q: What are the different types of Partner Developer Orgs and how do I know which one I need?
A: - Developer Edition org: If you’re going to be building, packaging, or uploading your app, choose an Development org. This will provide you with access to a developer edition organization configured especially for partners.
- Demo Environment Org: If you are going to be testing your app or showing it to prospective customers, select a Test/Demo org. If you’re testing, you can create organizations just like the ones your customers use. If you’re demoing, you can create partner organizations designed for just that purpose, which includes increased storage, licenses, and extra features.
- Trailforce Org: If you’re going to be creating Trialforce templates, choose a Trialforce org. This gives you access to a Trialforce Source org that you can use to create customizable Trialforce templates. Keep in mind that the "Trialforce" option should not be used for customer trial orgs. They are intended only to be used as Trialforce Source orgs. Screen reader support enabled.
Q: Where can I learn more about Trialforce?
A: Learn more here >
Q: What is the difference between Partner Developer Edition, Partner Enterprise Edition, Partner Group Edition, Partner Professional Edition, and Consulting Partner Edition orgs?
A: Partner Developer Edition: Best used for developing or demoing and typically used to develop and install packages. There is limited storage of up to 250MB without sandbox access. You may request approval for Trialforce to clone with package, configuration, and sample data. The org will expire after 1 year of inactivity.
Partner Enterprise Edition - This edition includes all Enterprise Edition features, and used for light developing/testing. Available Partner editions: EE, PE, GE, are used to test packages and solutions against each edition of Salesforce. Expires in 1 year, but can be extended; includes 1GB storage, and sandboxes.
Partner Group Edition - This is the legacy edition of Essentials. Essentials is what we provide now as the lowest edition but it's not available on Environment hub. The biggest advantage of having Professional and Group as a partner version is that it allows to test with API enabled before passing the Security Review. For Essentials partners now need to spin up a trial org here and log a case get the API access.
Partner Professional Edition -
Consulting Partner Edition - Configured for Consulting Partner specific needs, e.g. Wave Einstein Analytics licenses and more Community logins; also, closely mirrors the EE specifications. Typically used for developing and demoing, but requires expiration extension after 1 year.
Q: I have an existing Partner Developer Edition (PDE) org where the API Call Limit (per 24 hours) is less than 50K. Now that this limit has been increased to 50K, can I upgrade this existing org?
A:&nbs; No. The API Call Limit (per 24 hours) = 50K is only available to new Partner Developer Edition orgs created after June 21, 2017 (when the update was made).
Q: What does the IoT Explorer license entail and how does it work with other licenses I may own?
A: The Salesforce IoT Explorer Edition license only impacts three things:
- 1. Whether or not the IoT objects are visible in the setup tree.
- 2. The number of platform events usable by IoT Explorer (trial allows 15,000, the full product allows 500,000)
- 3. The number of devices usable by IoT Explorer (trial allows 10, the full product allows 10,000).
Q: How can I tell when an org will expire?
A: Here are a few ways to find the expiration date:
- 1. Check license "Expiration Date" column on the Setup > Company Information page. Click setup Gear > Developer Console (if you have view all perms), click the "Query Editor" tab, and copy/paste "Select TrialExpirationDate from Organization." Then, click "Execute" button bottom left in window. Results should display your org's expiration date.
- 2. Install Environment Hub and that will show when all your (linked) Orgs expire. Screen reader support enabled.
Q: Do you have more information on requesting environments for each of your products?
A: Yes. Learn more here >
Q: Where can I learn more about Environment Hub?
